When you decide to get a PDA, there are so many choices it is difficult to decide on one that is right for you. The most important consideration is to know how you are going to use the PDA once you have it. Take time to think about the possibilities before you make your purchase.

Some people simply use their PDAs for a clock and calendar, address book, and to take a few notes. If this is the case, you probably do not need a PDA with a lot of memory. PDA memory starts at 16 megabytes, two-thirds of which will be available for use after accounting for the operating system.

If you use the PDA for accessing the Internet, making and writing on spreadsheets, or playing computer games, you will need more memory. Some PDAs have a Global Positioning System (GPS), while many of the newer ones double as mobile phones. All this takes as much memory as you can get on a PDA.

Processing speed may also be important to you. If you need to access the information in your PDA and you do not want to wait, you need a fast processing speed to get it done quickly. Check out all the options and find the one that will work for you.

You can buy software or download it from the Internet to personalize it further. Also, you might want a PDA with special features like a memory card slot. You can get PDAs with synchronization so that they can give and receive data to and from your PC.

It is sometimes difficult to type in information on a touch screen with a stylus. Synchronization makes it much easier to get some data from your memory card onto your PDA.

Memory cards are very important to most PDA users. These are used to save and transfer data from their PDA to other devices such as PCs. Remember that there are memory cards with many different amounts of storage space on them. Be sure to get one that is adequate for the information, pictures, or MP3s you want to store on them.

Bluetooth technology is popular these days, and many PDAs come with Blue-tooth-enabled devices. You can get headsets, mice, and keyboards that will work with your PDA. These accessories can make working with your PDA much easier.

If you are visually impaired, there are PDAs made for you. These PDAs do not rely on touch screens for input. Instead, they are controlled by voice commands and buttons that make the programs easier for you to use.

As you are getting your PDA, remember to get those items that will protect it. You will need a case for your PDA, but make it one that will not weigh it down excessively. It should be sturdy, but not too heavy. Then, get electronic cleaning wipes. These are invaluable in cleaning your touch screen without damaging it.

Getting the right PDA for you can take a little research and some time spent shopping. If you find a PDA you are satisfied with, the effort will be worth it.

PDAs are not yet hand-held PCs, but have been used by many people over the years. PDAs are better-known as pocket pc’s or palmtop organizers. PDAs have many uses including: mathematics, use as a timekeeper with calendar subroutines, browsing cyberspace, sending and receiving e-mail, video, typewriting and word processing, name and address book functions, making and compiling spreadsheets, reading bar codes, receiving radio broadcasts or stereo listening, playing computer games, entering poll results, and GPS. More modern PDAs also have color screens, MP3 music and telephony capabilities, allowing them to be employed as cellphones (smartphones), web browsers, and portable media players. Several now also include cameras that can photograph scenes which can then be uploaded to Flickr and mySpace accounts. Virtually all newer PDAs can surf the Net, intranets or extranets via Wi-Fi, or Wireless Wide-Area Networks just about all PDA’s utilize touch screen displays leaving out Smartphones which depend upon menu systems attributable to their tinier display screens.

 PDA’s Past

The term “personal data assistant” was first used on Jan 7th, 1992 by then Apple Computer Chief Executive Officer John Sculley at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, Nevada, concerning the Apple Newton.

PDAs are occasionally denoted as “Palms”, “Palm Pilots” or “Palm Tops” so-named after an early personal digital assistant produced by USR and Palm Inc called the “Palm Pilot”. Today however, the term is much more encompassing and includes a very diverse range of products developed by a host of many manufacturers including HP, Dell, Blackberry and Sharp to name a few.

 Characteristic capabilities

Presently, a regular PDA has a touch screen for data entry, a memory card slot for data storage and at the least one of the following for device-todevice communication: IrDA, Bluetooth and/or WiFi. All the same, many PDAs (normally those used primarily as cellular phones) may not have a touch screen, alternatively using softkeys, a directional pad and either the numerical computer keyboard or a thumb keyboard for idata nput.

In order to meet the PDA definition, standard software should include an appointment calendar, a task list, an address book for business and personal contacts and some kind of notes program. Internet connected PDAs also usually include E-mail and Web support. Most units also include memo recording software for audio notes. Very handy for remembering important details.

 Not Quite A Laptop Replacement…Yet

Possibly, to a higher degree than any other computer device, the personal digital assistant lacks the raw computing horsepower and Wireless Broadband capabilities of a desktop or notebook computer. Presently, costs of laptop computers are coming down. Although a good deal bigger in size, laptop computers have more full-size screens and keyboards and are have greater computing power.

However, the OQO Model 2 has been brought out in recent times as a fully desktop PC compatible PDA with a USB port so that people can use their normal work and business software or play computer games compatible with ubiquitous operating systems such as Windows XP. It can also connect to regular PC peripherals. Costs still have a way to fall prior to mass adoption takes place in the market but OQO is no longer the exclusive manufacturer of these types of units, so costs should fall possibly within the next few years.

Conclusion

The PDAs strength is that it is easy to transport and less bulky than full-sized computers. It slides easily into a dress shirt or trousers pocket. The additional features like cameras, Global Positioning System, telephony and MP3 player make it flexible unlike any other type of computers in the market.

About the Author: The originator of this article has worked as a Pocket PC software programmer for over 5 years. He updates his web log weekly and addresses many areas of mobile computing including PDAs.
Many people do not require full desktop capabilities while on the go. As long as they can access their information and sync their data to a full-sized computer when they arrive at their homes and offices, that’s really all they need and want to do. So at least in the short run, the PDA will most likely remain as a portable helper for millions of users for years to come.

Talk and chat for free with fring mobile voip. Connect to Skype, Google Talk, MSN Messenger, Twitter & SIP contacts from anywhere. “Fring” is a free software program and service for Windows Mobile 5, 6 and Symbian phones that uses VoIP to allow you to make cheap and free calls and instant messages. If you’re looking for a way to bring down the cost of making a phone call, fring may be the solution you’ve been seeking.

It’s a unique offering that for the first time brings together connections to Skype, SIP, GoogleTalk, MSN Messenger, plus the sub-blogging service Twitter. You can choose whatever SIP service you like, including the GizmoProject, VoipCheap, VoipStunt, Free World DialUp and others, and even use SIP on fring with otherwise non-SIP enabled devices. These services come together on your mobile handset to give you the best possible chances to keep your phone costs low.

The arrangement works over over 3G, GPRS and Wi-Fi networks regardless of your carrier. All you need is your carrier’s data plan or a hotspot and you’;re good to go to make a free or low cost VoIP call. It allows you to conserve you airtime and save it for circumstances when no Wi-Fi connection is available. In addition, fring to fring calls are entirely free which makes buddy-to-buddy communications a snap. If you have a lot of friends, you’ll love fring.

To begin a conversation, you simply pick a contact and hit the green button, or go to options and then click either call or chat to begin a communication session. Does it get much easier than that?

fring allows you to organize all your IM and phone contacts in one place and rather than using SMS, you can chat freely using Messenger. For $30 per year you can use your SkypeOut account to make free calls to any phone in North America and low cost international calls.

If you have a lot of IM contacts, you can not only see when your friends are online, you can also see if they’re typing or not. It makes the chat feel more like a real conversation instead of waiting in limbo as they type their responses.

I’ve been a Skype user for years now and have all my phone numbers and contact information located there, so fring is a big plus in helping me to keep all this information together and make it available when I use the other services. The beauty of Skype (besides VoIP) is that it’s very much like GMail in that, your information does not exist on your device. You can access it from anywhere and on any device including your laptop, so it’s always available no matter what circumstances you find yourself in. All you need is an Internet connection and it’s always handy. That’s a big advantage for a person on the go and fring is a perfect tool to get the most out of the security and convenience this offers.

The beauty of the chat feature of fring as compared to SMS, is that you can view your entire chat conversation in real-time on your handset and reduce the high accumulated costs of SMS. However, fring does have some annoying aspects. Such as when you have 4 contacts named simply Joe and there’s no way to distinguish them. It’s a real oversight and needs to be corrected. Fortunately, it should only be a problem if you have too many people with the same identifying name on your list.

I laud the creators of fring for their efforts to create a different means for people to talk at much lower costs. The cellphone industry needs to be reigned in and taken to task for not providing cost effective services for people and businesses to use. Products like fring (if they become widely enough used) can put pressure on these companies and force them to lower the cost of phone calls for everyone. Hopefully, enough people will adopt fing, and services like it, quickly so that this can become a reality sooner rather than later.

The HTC P3300 is both a PDA phone and a GPS device combined in one and can be put to varied uses. One can use it to navigate through the roads and by lanes of unknown destinations. One can use it to know the exact locations in particular instances in time. There is a TomTom Navigator 6 application in this mobile phone that makes this possible. In its PDA ‘avatar’ on the other hand, the HTC P3300 can be used for connecting and communicating with friends, family members and relatives across the globe.

With GSM/GPRS, Bluetooth® 2.0, and Wi-Fi, the connectivity options are all encompassing. Easy access to emails makes this HTC mobile a favourite among people who have their fingers on quite a few pies. An FM radio option is perfect for users wanting to spend a few moments of their leisure time in listening to the stations of their choice. Business users can also access important documents in this Microsoft Windows Mobile phone and keep up on the work front.

To conclude, it can be said that the P3300 is a highly innovative mobile phone that is bringing in a lot of changes in the lives of people owning and using the same. As a matter of fact, many among them are making the most of the attractive offers on this and other equally amazing handsets and getting to use them at industry leading costs.

With the S710, HTC arguably developed one of the most user-friendly smartphones of recent times. This was down to the innovative design that incorporated the looks and simplicity of a straight-forward bar phone on the surface and the increased usability of a QWERTY keypad underneath.

HTC are clearly intent on building-on the fan base developed by its well-received predecessor with the release of the S730; by making tweaks to the design and features rather than wholesale changes.

One of the main plus-points of the S710 was the dual keypad design and thankfully this remains in place. There has been a noticeable increase in the weight of the S730 when compared to the previous model; this has gone up from 120g in the S710 to 150g in the S730 and although it does make the S730 feel particularly solid, it is something worth taking into consideration. The looks have undergone a slight renovation, but it isn’t necessarily for the better as the curved edges along with the silver & black colour scheme has been removed to make way for muted greys and square edges. Not quite the best decision I must say.

There have been some changes on the front keypad and the design has been a little more streamlined to make way for a repositioning of the soft keys. As well as this the keys on the slide-out QWERTY keypad have been modelled more directly on a PC keyboard to make typing a little more user-friendly.

The S730 also rectifies the omission of 3G from the S710 with the addition of 3G HSDPA enabling download speeds of up to 3.6mbps, making this a more plausible device for mobile-office needs.

The most notable improvement to the S710 though is the upgrading of the processor from 200 MHz to 400 MHz which makes a major difference. The most notable improvement due to this is the speed the screen switches when sliding the phone between keypads, which was a notable issue with the S710.

The HTC home page has been implemented as an additional extra to complement the now-standard Windows Mobile platform, which is of course the same OS seen in the S710.

Perhaps it was too much to ask, but it would have been nice if the tweaks and improvements had extended to the camera functionality. Still present is the same 2MP (without autofocus or flash) seen in the S710 – no change there then.

The S730 is by no means a revolutionary upgrade to the S710, but HTC seem to have taken the quick and sensible route to upgrading a popular product. The same characteristics that made it popular with consumers are still present and improvements have been made where they can be without spoiling what the customers liked about its earlier incarnation. Though it may be a stretch to recommend the S730 to owners of the previous version, there are certainly enough good points to make it worthy of your attention as a starting-point into the smartphone region.

The HTC S730 is not widely available at this time and is on Pre-Release.

One of the most popular personal data assistants on the market, Palm products have been in briefcases and purses of busy professionals for years. With the rotating screen, even left-handers can easily use all the features of the T3 and PalmOne Tungsten T3 PDA accessories are designed for easy integration with the handheld device and for simplicity of use. Whether using proprietary OEM equipment or that from branded vendors, most PalmOne Tungsten T3 PDA accessories should be able to be connected and used without difficulty.

Although user are infatuated with many of the features of the unit, they may also be interested in adding some of the many PalmOne Tungsten T3 PDA accessories to make their handheld computing experience more enjoyable. Despite the estimated five day life of the unit’s internal battery, forgetting to put it on the cradle at home or in the office or extensive traveling and use makes the need for a way to charge the internal battery when it starts to run low.

Automotive adapters are one of the best selling PalmOne Tungsten T3 PDA accessories on the market as well as one that plugs into a 110-volt outlet, and is connected to the unit with the car charger cord to charge the unit when in motel rooms. Another of the PalmOne Tungsten T3 PDA accessories offered is the USB charger that allows the unit to be charged from any regular outlet in the home or motel room while traveling.

Leaving Charging Unit At Home For Permanent Connection

Many Palm users prefer to leave their base unit at home connected to their computer, yet may need to connect to their laptop to add or delete documents while on the road. The PalmOne Tungsten T3 PDA accessories available to accomplish this are of course the portable charger and the portable synchronization cable. By having the proprietary software installed on the laptop computer, the cable is easier to carry than the entire combination cradle that can be left at home or in the office.

The ability to edit word and spreadsheet software on the handheld is a major plus for the unit’s users and once the changes are made using the connectivity PalmOne Tungsten T3 PDA accessories can be sent to the user’s laptop, the unit’s internal dialer can pull phone numbers from its memory and send the edited documents to others. The use of PalmOne Tungsten T3 PDA accessories makes using the unit much more convenient and provides a productivity boost.

The term heavy duty instantly increases a person’s comfort level, whether it be for tools or power equipment. They instantly believe the item is designed for rough use and treatment. Similar feelings are often invoked when a person buys a heavy duty PDA case, believing that their handheld electronic unit will be safe from anything short of a nuclear explosion. While it may afford better protection, the reality is how the heavy duty PDA case fits the unit and the amount of abuse it suffers may make them no better the a less expensive model.

Generally speaking, many handhelds can cost several hundreds of dollars and the information stored on them may be priceless to the user. A heavy duty PDA case can make them feel more comfortable knowing there are extra layers of protection for the unit than in many other types of cases. People who work in rough environments, such as in construction or in an industrial environment may need better protection for their electronic device.

In most cases, people carrying and using a PDA are going to be conscious of the potential for damage of the unit simply because of the environment in which they work. Others working in office-like setting may not see the need for a heavy duty PDA case and forget about how it is treated when it bounces around inside a briefcase.

Providing More Protection For The Money

In most cases, the cost of a heavy duty PDA case will not be that much more than a regular case designed for normal use. Realistically, many people do not equate their occupation with normal use and may want to consider having a heavy duty PDA case for the one or two times when the environment may require such protective steps.

Usually, all it takes is having the unit damaged by being jostled around to make them realize that for a few dollars more they could have saved a valuable piece of equipment by using a heavy duty PDA case. On the downside, those who do use a heavy duty PDA case may forget how delicate their equipment is and figure if they accidentally leave it on the roof of their car when the drive away, the handheld will be protected from the fall.

The unit inside a heavy duty PDA case may survive the bounce off the pavement but regardless of how heavy duty the case may be, it probably will not survived being run over by another vehicle in the parking lot or on the road.

For the most part PDA accessories are going to be cheap enough that finding a place that specializes in PDA accessories repair will probably take more time than buying a new one will take. If you have a part such as a keyboard or charger that quits working and it is still under warranty, a call to the factory will either will to send it for PDA accessories repair work or will send you a replacement. With most of these items there are no usable serviceable parts inside and repairs, if available, will need to be done by a trained technician.

To begin with, in order to affect PDA accessories repair on your own you will have to have a source for any parts that may have gone bad. You will also to make sure you are ordering the right part for the right accessories or you will be paying double the postage to have it shipped to your location. In many cases, PDA accessories repair on items such as cables or plugs will take more time than the cost of a new one is worth.

Cable repairs are generally a simple matter of exposing any internal wires and splicing them back together. If this type of PDA accessories repair is done properly, it should allow it to work but a new one will be wanted to reduce the chance of a short developing in the wire.

Replace Or Repair Often A Budget Decision

Depending on the device you have and the accessory that has quit functioning, the decision to have it repaired or replaced may be simple matter of finances. Generally speaking, if the cost of the PDA accessories repair is less than 60 percent of the cost of a new one, it is probably better to replace it. However, in some instances, especially if the product is out of production, replacement parts may not be available making the decision to replace it more obvious.

Finding a place that performs PDA accessories repair may also be difficult. Since many of the accessories are considered throw away items due to their low cost, many companies do not even bother offering to fix them. In order to remain competitive in the market their prices would have to be high enough to make performing PDA accessories repair worth their time and cost to repair would be almost equal to the cost of a new one.

Owning a Handspring Visor is a step in the right technological direction and you will want to make sure you take sufficient precautions to make sure it is always protected. Find the right Visor PDA case should be easy enough simply by visiting a Palm store or shopping them online, but for some really unique views of a Visor PDA case, searching many of the non-traditional resources can help you find some really useful cases.

Since 2003 when Palm bought out Handspring, they have formed a stronger contender in the mobile communication and data handling industry and many of the products designed by Palm are now available for the Handspring units including a Visor PDA case made of leather. Two basic styles are widely available, the one in which the PDA slips inside and closes at the top or the book style. Both have the Palm logo embossed on the front, although it is very subtle in its presence.

While many of the cases are designed to hold only the handheld unit, larger portfolio sized cases have included secure straps into which the handheld can be placed, creating a Visor PDA case that doubles as a portable time management system.

Many Manufacturers Get In On The Act

Third party vendors also offer cases for the popular handhelds and one of the more innovative is a hard shell metal Visor PDA case with a built-in keyboard for data entry. Busy persons such as doctors and journalists often make massive text entries into their PDAs and having an available keyboard built in makes it faster for them, The keyboard fits into the top half of the Visor PDA case and works with all but a couple of the models.

Even small companies are making adjustments to their PDA case sizes, making them more to the size of the Palm units and a Visor PDA case can be found in a multitude of colors and many different patterns. These companies are designing cases to meet the many moods of the PDA’s users and to better reflect their individualism.

While not directly linked to the company that makes the PDAs, these private suppliers also do not advertise their products for use with any specific model, rather most refer to their pine as being a universal product. Finding the right Visor PDA case that meets both the visual and physical requirements of the user, should not be difficult, no matter where it is sought.
